India and France have held detailed discussions on advancing the strategic partnership, including civil nuclear energy, and defence and security cooperation, with a special focus on small and modular reactors (SMRs), said people familiar with the matter. Building SMRs in India with support from France was the key focus at the second meeting of the India-France Special Task Force on Civil Nuclear Energy in New Delhi on Monday. The meeting was co-chaired by foreign secretary Vikram Misri and secretary-general of the French ministry for Europe and foreign affairs, Anne-Marie Descotes.Both sides undertook a comprehensive review of the progress made over the past year through various meetings and consultations. India and France reaffirmed the importance of engagement in emerging technologies like small and advanced modular reactors. Russia is the only other country involved in making SMRs in India. Descotes thanked the Indian side for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation to President Emmanuel Macron to the AI Impact Summit that India is hosting in February 2026.
