How Trump is driving Asia to diversify away from US

Image
[ad_1] President Donald Trump's tariffs and other policies have some financiers and officials in Asia predicting the remaking of the post-World War II economic order, leading to an urgent quest to diversify away from America. But it's not proving to be easy. The period after World War II saw a global order underpinned by multilateral institutions, such as the United Nations and the World Bank. The United States emerged as the dominant force, with the dollar as the world's reserve currency. The Trump administration appears to be breaking from that order, with foreign and economic policies that have challenged U.S. allies, undercut some multilateral institutions and used tactics such as tariffs. While it is unclear what will eventually emerge, interviews this month with more than a dozen senior bankers, investors and officials based in Asia showed that they are not waiting to find out. They are looking for an 'America plus 1' strategy, which reduces their relia...

India can leverage US tariff threat for mutual reductions: Panagariya

Image
[ad_1] The Chairman of the 16th Finance Commission, Arvind Panagariya, on Saturday said that the looming threat of reciprocal tariffs from the US could be turned into a positive if India can leverage it to secure mutual tariff reductions. He, however, cautioned that if it results in a tariff war, where the US imposes tariffs on India and New Delhi retaliates with its own tariffs, it would have an "unfortunate" outcome. "We have a very good opportunity to do a win-win bargain. So we can really turn it into a win-win situation. Now that the reciprocal tariff threat is coming, it is doubly beneficial that we also, in the process, hold the United States to reciprocal tariff reductions as well, and get access for our goods that we export to them," Panagariya said. Panagariya was replying to a query on how he foresees the impact of US tariff volatility on India over the next 3-4 years. US President Donald Tariff on multiple times said that America will impose re...

Indian tariffs are WTO compliant, govt should convey that to US: GTRI

Image
[ad_1] India's import duties are in compliance with the global trade rules and the government should convey this to the US administration, economic think tank GTRI said on Sunday. It also said that negotiating a comprehensive free trade agreement with the US presents several challenges. The US may push India to open government procurement to American firms, reduce agricultural subsidies, weaken patent protections by allowing evergreening, and remove restrictions on data flows, it said, adding India has resisted these demands for decades and is still not prepared to accept. US President Donald Trump on multiple occasions have alleged that India has high tariffs and termed it "tariff king" and "tariff abuser". Tariffs are import duties imposed and collected by the government and paid by companies to bring foreign goods into the country. "India's tariffs are consistent with WTO (World Trade Organisation) rules. "They are the result of a sin...

During the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Washington, India and the US announced their commitment to more than double the two-way commerce to USD 500 billion by 2030 and negotiate the first tranche of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by fall of 2025. Friendless EU suddenly turns to India's trade and defence edge in a changing world

Image
[ad_1] The president of the European Commission and all her fellow commissioners turned up in India last week, in a hastily put-together visit meant to re-energize relations. The bonhomie on display in New Delhi sent out the message that Europe still had some friends — and contrasted starkly with what was unfolding simultaneously in Washington.Ursula von der Leyen and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi together announced a set of promises meant to drive India and the EU closer together. They would conclude a free trade agreement by the end of the year, they said. Von der Leyen also told the media that Europe intended to create a “defense and security partnership” similar to recent agreements it has signed with Japan and South Korea. All this positive energy didn’t just feel different from the state of the transatlantic relationship. It also represented a major shift from three years ago, when India failed, in European eyes, to offer a strident enough condemnation of the Russian ...

Wheat industry demands import duty reduction to curb speculation and price volatility

Image
[ad_1] The wheat processing industry of India has demanded that the government should reduce the import duty on wheat, as climate uncertainties have increased the price volatility and speculation. The industry expects to import 2 to 3 million tonnes of wheat to increase availability and in turn curb the speculation. However, the government has maintained that it has sufficient stock of wheat in the country and the industry should try to curb inflationary pressures by passing on the benefits of government schemes like OMSS to the consumers. Navneet Chitalangia, president, Roller Flour Millers’ Federation of India (RFMFI) said, “There is uncertainty about climate and prices, which is leading to increase in speculative activity. To control the market volatility, we want to increase the availability as much as possible.”“After the procurement process is over, ensuing farmers get the right prices, the government should reduce the import duty to nil or keep it less than 10% from the e...
